National Formosa University's Art Center held the opening reception for artist Teng Hsin-Yi's new solo exhibition "A Fleeting Moment" on 12/30 (Tuesday). This exhibition features over 30 ceramic sculpture and ceramic painting works, in which the artist explores the propositions between time, memory, and the construction of self-identity through a delicate and restrained visual vocabulary.
The exhibition's theme, "A Fleeting Moment," points to the meeting point where experience, thought, and emotion converge after drifting for a long period of time — like light briefly flashing across flowing water, silent yet bright, foreshadowing the imminent onset of transformation. This crystallized state, both fragile and full of power, has become the creative core that the artist repeatedly contemplates and responds to.
Teng Hsin-Yi notes that "a fleeting moment" symbolizes capturing a fleeting spark of creative inspiration within fragmented moments of time, and is also a moment of prolonged dialogue with oneself or with the work itself. The creative process is often accompanied by doubt and struggle, and it is only at the moment of completion that the true form of the work finally emerges. For her, these "fleeting moments" carry past experiences, present feelings, and expectations for the future.
Teng says, "Accepting my dissatisfaction with myself, my flaws, and my beauty — accepting every facet of myself — in this fleeting moment, I am simply here. That is my most complete self, right now, in this present moment." She uses clay as a vessel to carry inner experience, recording time and emotion, continuously moving between, questioning, and exploring the possibilities of artistic practice.
Li Yen-Hsi, Director of NFU's Art Center, stated that the artist reconciles and integrates the difficulties, pain, and entanglements she faces in relationships through her creative work, pursuing a harmonious state of regularity and balance through rational, fluid, and rounded lines. He hopes that viewers, too, can draw different inspirations from the exhibition and come to value each "fleeting moment" in their own lives. In addition, the exhibited works deliberately conceal their title labels, in the hope that, without revealing the intended meaning, viewers can freely exercise their own imagination.
In recent years, Teng Hsin-Yi's creative practice has turned toward meditation and inner awareness, blending natural elements, symbolic imagery, and personal imagination, transforming them into the delicate forms and textures of her ceramic works — presenting both a state of inner contemplation and reflecting the resonant relationship between the self and the natural world.
As her life experiences have evolved, the core of Teng Hsin-Yi's creative work has also shifted — from an early questioning and negotiation of self-identity roles, toward embodying a state of present spiritual presence. "A Fleeting Moment" reflects precisely this transformation, using clay as a medium to depict the subtle and quiet balance between memory, nature, and present life.
